The Student Flat

The student flat is not generally known for being either glamorous or neat. But why not?  Surely to live in a clean and aesthetic environment would help students with studying! Thing is, there exists a misconception that to live in style you have to have an excessive amount of money. But even with a tight budget, there is a lot of beautiful designer furniture available on the net.Though student flats more often than not lack the space to fit hugely sized furniture, but this doesn’t necessary hinder their options. It’s all about being creative with the space that you have…

A combination of a bedroom and a study is the best way for students to maximise the limited space their flats offer. The web shop Fashion for Home for example, has a great range of quality designed furniture, including beds, desks, chairs and so much more, all for relatively good prices that students could afford.

The living room is something students can have a lot of fun with, especially when flatmates can split the costs. Depending on space and the number of roommates sharing the flat, the sofa has to be specifically chosen to meet your requirements. A trendy sofa bedis ideal as it can easily be turned into a bed for a late-night crash, though a good quality bean bag for only £39 might do the trick just as well.

It is important to remember two things when buying your furniture. First thing is to prioritise what you need and to think of what is realistic in your given situation. The second thing to remember is that you always get what you pay for. Buying designer furniture for a little extra cost often turns out cheaper in the long run, as it doesn’t damage or break easily. Plus, with beautiful furniture pieces you make your home a lot more liveable, and therefore studying more enjoyable!

Top Festive Windows of 2011

It’s that time of year when people decorate their homes to celebrate Christmas. Businesses in particular try to outdo each other with their festive displays of Santa’s and elves or angels and cribs. Harrods, London’s famous store, has spent thousands of pounds featuring a Ralph Lauren dress in a sparkling wintry scene.
In Nazareth, the home town of Jesus, a number of businesses have tried to outdo each other with a variety of nativity displays in their windows. Stores around countries in many parts of the world celebrate the season with festive window displays. One of the joys of Christmas shopping is looking at what the department stores have done with their windows. Children in particular love to see window displays of Santa and his elves, of sleighs and reindeers and of trees sparkling with shimmering sequins tinsel.
In Birmingham, Harvey Nichols has some wonderful sparkling displays featuring some of the best and brightest designer labels. One display features a life size model of a white horse, while others include winter wonderlands, snow drifts, and even large blocks of ice – each display featuring more of the store’s Christmas designer goodies.
Your Local Store
An increasing number of small traders now attempt to make their window displays look more attractive at Christmas. There have always been those small shops that has some tinsel in the window but an increasing number of shop owners now do their best to compete with the larger stores, albeit on a smaller scale.
Once December comes along you start to see the changes in and around the streets and shopping locations where you live. Fairy lights are everywhere these days and have migrated from Christmas trees and windows to the outside of houses and even to the gardens. These days some streets are lit up fit to rival Blackpool and Oxford Street, with each successive building trying to outdo the one before.
What About Your Windows?
Many home owners like to put up festive window displays at Christmas time.
Made to measure window blinds make an ideal framework for a festive window display, whether you decide on a simple, electronic trio of candles or you want to festoon the space with cotton wool and Santa, the display will look even better with such a wonderful frame.
In recent years many people have gone overboard with the festive window displays and decorate the windows in every room of their home. Reindeer, coloured lights, snowmen and elves are the top favourites for these bright Christmas windows. There is no doubt that even in what some have termed a secular age, people still like festive displays at Christmas time. Some people have their made to measure window blinds in materials that feature traditional Christmas scenes, such as Santa going down a chimney or riding through the sky with his reindeer. Why not take a look around your area and see what you would rate as the top festive windows of 2011?

When Should You Replace Your Bed?

Do you sleep well at night? If not, when was the last time you replaced your bed? Conventional wisdom says that you should replace your bed every ten years, but that advice is based in an entirely different era. We now understand more about ergonomics, sleep, and comfort, and “mattress technology” has come a long way.
The new mantra is to replace your bed every seven years. That’s still long enough that your walled shouldn’t be smarting at the last purchase when it comes around to replacement time (especially if you buy discount mattresses), but it’s frequent enough to ensure that your bed stays in tip-top condition. Are you unsure if your bed needs replaced? If so, these tips might help you.
Check your mattress
If your mattress looks old, dips or sags in any places, or has rips in it, it’s time to replace it. You should also replace it if you can feel springs or coils when you lie down. Don’t put off looking for a new mattress. These days, discount mattresses are inexpensive and good quality. You’ll be glad you bought one when you enjoy a blissful night’s sleep.
Check your bed
If you hear creaking when you get into bed, it’s time to buy a new bed. If the supports are lose or cracked, it’s also a good time to invest in a new bed.
You may also want to look into the possibility of changing your bed if you feel like the existing one is too small (or even too big, if you’ve just moved house).
Moving home (or just moving the bed from one room to another) can put stress on both the bed itself and the mattress. If anything feels wobbly or loose, consider replacing your bed and/or mattress.
Caring for your new bed
Just because you’re shopping for beds on a budget, it doesn’t mean that you should just dump it in your room and forget about it. Even budget beds can last several years if they’re looked after correctly. Consider buying a mattress topper to protect your new mattress. Make sure that you turn the mattress every few months, as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Don’t make assumptions about how often a mattress should be turned. Different mattresses need to be turned in different ways, and at different frequencies. You could risk violating your bed’s warranty if you don’t follow the instructions.
Put your comfort first
Test out a few different sizes of bed, and designs of mattress before you buy a new one. Even if you follow the new suggestion of keeping your bed for only seven years, that’s still a long time to have to sleep on an uncomfortable bed! Everyone likes different things. The bed that the salesman says is super comfortable could be far too soft, or far too firm, for you. If you have any doubts at all, don’t buy.
Finally, if you share your bed with someone, make sure that you involve them in the buying decision. You’ll still end up with sleepless nights if one of you is comfortable, but the other isn’t!
